Picture Books as Mentor Texts for Secondary Students

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Picture books are often sequestered to the elementary school years. But these short beautifully illustrated texts are a treasure trove of learning for older students that can be quickly accessed in the classroom. This session will cover deeper background knowledge on how a picture book is put together, how to market learning by picture books to older students, and using picture books as mentor texts for literary concepts. We will also discuss creating a reading mentor program, where older students with striving literacy skills mentor and read to younger children—all while increasing their own reading skills and confidence. You will leave with relevant book lists and hands on tools for implementing these texts for all levels of learners into your classroom.
